Did you see the show on PBS about the DARPA challenge where Stanley won? I believe it was a NOVA but don't remember for sure. Anyway it was a pretty damn cool program.
I was glad to see Stanley win because I thought their solution was the neatest one. I look forward to the seeing the next DARPA challenge where they have the robo-cars driving through city streets.
I hate robots combined with vehicles in any way! It is all part of the de-adventurism that is taking place in all aspects of western culture. Bhaa I say! BHAA!!
Jon and i contemplated entering the first year's challenge, but alas, Team Struggle was under funded and over educated. Well, at least one of those two.
It was quite interesting to see how he used error and data decay theories to interpret the laser signals reading the terrain. Not to mention the crazy ass animations of the real time data interpretation.
It's coming notorious, and I have to say, i wouldn't mind napping or reading during some long annoying highway trips. You can always turn it off (or hardware hack it) when you want to be back in control.
PShit! The only point of making cooler technology is so that you can either drive it, fly it, or sail it! Besides, they already have vehicles that you don't have to actively drive... they are called "trains." Space exploration is going to the robots, undersea exploration is going to robots, social experiance is mediated through machines... I can only assume that somewhere there are fuckbots that are having sex for people. Humanity might as well just sit on our collective couchs and experiance all of life throught a little screens...
Please explain to my un-enlightened mind how any of you can possibly think the Stanley approach was more impressive than TerraMax.
Just say the names out loud. "Stanley"...that's some nerdy kid from the '80s. "TerraMax" is a name that demands respect and makes one think of this:

Face it, Stanley may have won this battle, but TerraMax will win the war. In the next round, I suspect those brilliant Teledyne (formerly Rockwell) engineers will program TerraMax to run over the competition and use their remains as fuel. In fact, I'm going to suggest it to them tomorrow in our weekly conference call.

Notorious are you saying you have something against Michael Knight and K.I.T.T.?! Man that's harsh.
